9 Tips to Increase Security on the Safari Browser
Safari is a popular web browser that is used by millions of people around the world.
It’s fast, reliable, and easy to use – but security should still be a top priority for any user. Fortunately, there are many ways to boost the security of your Safari browsing experience.
So are you ready?

1. Keep Your Software Up to Date
A crucial thing you can do to keep Safari safe is to make sure you have the latest version installed.
New versions usually come with improved security features and bug fixes, so it’s important to keep up with these updates as soon as possible. You can also set your browser preferences so that it checks for updates automatically.
2. Use Two-Step Authentication
Two-step authentication adds an extra layer of security when logging into sites or apps.
After entering your username and password, the system will prompt you for a second form of verification, such as a one-time code sent via text message or an authentication app like Google Authenticator or Authy.
This makes it much harder for hackers to access your information, even if they manage to guess your password.
3. Use Apple’s Security Features
Apple provides its own security suite, designed specifically for macOS users; FileVault encrypts all data stored on hard drives, while Gatekeeper scans downloaded software/files before allowing them onto Macs.
Both give peace of mind (especially if someone else has access). Failing to utilize these features could lead to some problems. For example, you might encounter Search Baron, which is a redirect virus. Learning how to remove Search Baron from Safari and getting rid of it for good is not that hard, but it is still a hassle you want to avoid.
The security tools are already included with macOS, but they need to be activated first through System Preferences > Security & Privacy. Once enabled, all files stored will be encrypted, meaning only authorized users can access them even if stolen physically.
4. Use Secure Passwords
Passwords are one of the most common tools used by hackers and cybercriminals, so it’s essential that yours are strong and secure – never reuse passwords between accounts or use easily guessed words like ‘password’ or ‘12345’.
Instead, choose unique words or phrases that combine upper and lower case letters with numbers and symbols for added protection (e.g., P@ssw0rd!).
You can also use a password manager like LastPass or 1Password, which stores all of your passwords in an encrypted vault for easy access without having to remember each individual one manually – just don’t forget the master password.
5. Block Pop-Ups & Advertisements
Pop-up windows are often used by malicious websites as an alternative method of installing malware onto computers without users being aware – so blocking them is key to keeping yourself safe online.
To enable pop-up blocking within Safari, go into Preferences > Security > Block pop-up windows where you can select either Always block pop-ups or Allow specific websites only (so you don’t accidentally block legitimate ones).
Additionally, ad blockers such as Ghostery can be useful in helping prevent intrusive advertisements from appearing while browsing online too.
However, bear in mind they may affect how some websites look/function depending on how they’re designed/coded.
6. Use HTTPS Everywhere Possible
Whenever possible, always try and check for sites using HTTPS rather than HTTP.
These sites have encryption built in, which helps protect any data that are transferred between them (e.g., credit card numbers) from being intercepted by malicious third parties such as hackers/cybercriminals.
To ensure HTTPS connections whenever possible in Safari, click on Preferences > Advanced > Proxies, where you can tick both boxes under ‘Use Secure Web Proxies’ – these settings will now force Safari into using HTTPS whenever available on a given website instead of unencrypted HTTP links.
7. Enable Privacy Settings
Safari offers several settings designed specifically to protect your privacy while browsing the web.
For instance, you can turn on Private Browsing mode, which prevents websites from tracking your activity across multiple visits and stops them from storing cookies in your browser history. This also stops other users who use the same computer from accessing your data.
Additionally, enabling Do Not Track will tell websites not to track you across different pages on their website or gather information about what ads you click on while visiting their site.
8. Be Wary Of Suspicious Emails & Attachments
Phishing emails account for over 80% of successful cyberattacks today, so vigilance is key here; never click any links inside suspicious emails or open attachments unless absolutely sure about who sent them.
Instead, take time to check the sender’s details carefully before deciding what action needs to be taken next (if any). If unsure at all, then delete immediately regardless – better safe than sorry, after all.
9. Avoid Public WiFi Hotspots
Public internet hotspots offer convenience but, unfortunately, just aren’t secure enough due to their lack of encryption – meaning any sensitive data sent/received over such networks could easily end up in the wrong hands.
